John Meeks

Songs and Sounds for a nighttime drive

Creating escapist, mini movies through song, John Meeks has spent the good part of his life drawing on the influences of the southwestern United States. Meeks makes the musical accompaniment to the visual beauty and geology of the region that he constantly romanticizes and idealizes in his imagination. Desert psychedelia, surf, exotica, old country, Mexican folk, 1960's jazz and global ethnic rhythms all contribute to the songscapes in his head. John Meeks was born in Albuquerque, New Mexico into a musical family of wanderers and kind but misguided souls. Studying and playing music from early childhood, he dropped out of college and settled in the harsh wastelands of San Diego, CA. Though the consistently beautiful weather and pristine ocean views were trying, Meeks found a way to persevere and bring his vision to life. With two full length albums and two EPs, he gathered a following of like minded music fans. Two time San Diego Music Awards winner, Meeks and band toured the west coast up to Canada and back, garnering accolades from local and national media alike, even finding himself placed side by side with the great Bob Dylan on the Euro Americana Chart. Searching for the meaning of life, and the ideal place with plenty of space and inspiration to create, John Meeks eventually landed in Joshua Tree, CA.

Meeks is currently finishing a batch of new songs from the high desert and will be unleashing them upon the world in the coming months. More live shows as well as visual and aural collaborations with new friends will be announced soon. Stay in touch. Said accolades…
“…what is so compelling about Meeks' music is his simple, straightforward approach…songs are free of artifice, aren’t overly produced or orchestrated, and sound effortless.” - NPR      "…Meeks sings with a ghostly lonesomeness that's partly Roy Acuff, partly Neil Young and partly a bluegrass yodel...it's a voice from a much earlier era...his downtrodden lyrics are written from the gut, rather than the mind, and they're fit to melodies that feel like a natural wander rather than composed map...taken together, they make songs that feel lived in, musical expressions of emotions that aren't so much wondrous discoveries as they are worn resignations..."  - Hyperbolium
“…the dusty desert is the domain of Meeks…with his bone-dry sound must surely appeal to fans of Calexico…his voice shaking like a mirage…with trumpet and a fiddle that the atmosphere of Desire (Bob Dylan) calls…again with that wonderful trumpet, moreover, at the mouth put by Meeks himself...has rhythm, but in one way or another it always knows Meeks laziness to mount…”
